Living Stromatolites

Stromatolites (layered rocks), at Hamelin, are formed by cyanobacteria trapping fine sediment with a sticky film of mucus.

The sediment grains are then bound together with calcium carbonate extracted from the water.

The cyanobacteria move towards the light keeping pace with the accumulating sediment.
