The Rocks 1985

The area on the right was occupied by convicts, marines and their wives, when the Colony of New South Wales was officially a penal colony from 1788 to 1823.

Within the first four years, rows of houses were built by convicts. These buildings were along natural rock ledges and were described as being "on the rocks" - thus giving "The Rocks" name.
